IRELAND TAKE HOME THREE BRONZE MEDALS FROM ANAPA

John Joe McDonagh

Keith Flavin, Hughie Joyce and John Joe McDonagh lost out in their quests to reach the 49Kg, 52Kg and 81Kg finals at the Nikolay Pavlyukov Memorial Youth Tournament in Anapa, Russia today.

The Irish trio, who will be taking home three bronze medals from the prestigious Multi-Nations, were beaten at the last-four stage this morning and afternoon.

Keith Flavin
Flavin and Joyce lost out to Muradjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan and Jorge Luis Gordero-Parlay of Cuba in the light-flyweight and flyweight semi-finals.

McDonagh had been hoping to reach the 81Kg decider but was beaten 12-4 by Rauf Rahimon of Azerbaijan.

Today's defeats brings the curtain down on Ireland's involvement in the tournament.

Irish team manager and head coach Billy McClean said that the experience of competing against the best in the world will stand to Ireland at the 2012 AIBA World Youth Championships in Thailand.

"All our squad gave it absolutely everything they had in Anapa. They were up against world class opposition in Russia, Cuba, the Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, the best in the world, he said.

Hughie Joyce
"This tournament is like a mini-World Championships and the experience of competing at this level will stand to our boxers when they compete at the World Championships in Bangkok in October.

"We had a fabulous training camp in Anapa and we build up a very strong relationship with the Russian Federation and we are looking forward to working with them again in the future," he added.

The Irish squad have been in Anapa in training camp since March 21st. The squad are due to return home on Sunday evening via Dublin airport.

Thirteen nations are competing at the 2012 Nikolay Pavlyukov Memorial Youth Tournament.

JOYCE AND MCDONAGH COMPLETE RUSSIAN DOUBLE

Hughie Joyce

Hughie Joyce and John Joe McDonagh guaranteed Ireland another two bronze medals at the Nikolay Pavlyukov Memorial Youth Tournament following a brace of quarter-final wins over Russian opponents in Anapa, Russia today.

But Kurt Walker and Dean Walsh bowed out of the tournament after losing out at the last-eight stage.

Joyce, who boxes out of the St Michael's  Athy BC, produced a polished performance to post a 21-12 decision over Russian flyweight, Sergey Sokolov and McDonagh (Crumlin BC) followed that up with a fine 13-5 verdict over Roman Mamaev, also of Russia.

Joyce and McDonagh now join their Irish team-mate Keith Flavin in Friday's semi-finals.

Flavin faces Muradjon Akhmadaliev (Uzbekistan) tomorrow. Joyce is in against  Jorge Luis Gordero Parlay of Cuba and McDonagh meets Rauf Rahimov of  Azerbaijan.  All three Irish boxers will be taking home at least bronze.

Ireland lost out to Cuba this afternoon after Dean Walsh was beaten 13-9 by Armando Martinez-Rabi in the 56Kg class.

However, the Wexford CBS ace had the consolation of being involved in one of the bouts of the tournament by the banks of the Black Sea.

Both boxers went at it toe-to-toe for the three rounds and earned a well-deserved standing ovation at the final bell.

Walker, meanwhile, was controversially adjudged to have lost 10-9 to Azamat Zhansarbay of Kazakhstan. Walker (Canal BC) was the driving force in this contest but was left crestfallen when the verdict was announced.

Irish team manager and head coach Billy McClean stated that it was one of the worse decisions he has seen in all his years involved in boxing.

Walker and Zhansarbay were locked at 7-7 going onto the final round after sharing the opening frame 3-3.

Dean Walsh in action at the National Stadium

Kilkenny light-flyweight Keith Flavin guaranteed Ireland at least one bronze medal from the Nikolay Pavlyukov Memorial Youth Tournament in Anapa, Russia today.

The Paulstown BC ace, boxing for the second time in 24-hours, recorded a landslide 30-6 win over Hayrik Nazaryan of Armenia to book his ticket into the 49Kg semi-finals.

He'll now meet Muradjon Akhmadaliev of Uzbekistan in Friday's 49Kg semi-final.

Kurth Walker, Hughie Joyce and Dean Walsh also recorded impressive last-16 victories today.

But Irish team captain David Roche, Stephen Mulholland and Patrick Gaffey bowed out of the tournament this morning and afternoon.

Walker hammered out a 20-12 decision over Farid Agamoglanov of Azerbaijan and Joyce beat Rustan Kokaskevia of Abkhazia 17-6, both Irish boxers producing dominant
performances.

Wexford's Dean Walsh racked up a 12-1 verdict over Jon Botnaru  of Moldova to set up a 56Kg last-eight showdown with Armando Martinez-Rabi of Cuba.

Earlier today, Roche was somehow adjudged to have lost 10-9 to Aleksei Puskash of  Moldovan in the light-welterweight class. Irish team manager and head coach Billy McClean, who is working Ireland's corner along with Tom Hayes at the Black Sea holiday resort, said that Roche clearly won his contest.

Mulholland lost out to Ukrainian European silver medalist Igor Nesterov and Gaffey was beaten by Denislam Abdecshev of Kazakhstan.

CUBA TO TRAIN IN BELFAST

Cuba will train in Belfast in preparation for the 2012 Olympics in London.

The Cubans confirmed that they will join Australia - who will have a full compliment of ten male boxers at the XXX Olympiad - who have already confirmed that they will train in Northern Ireland ahead of the 2012 Games.

Cuba are the second most successful Olympic boxing nation of all time having won a total of 63 Olympic medals (32 gold). The USA are in number one spot having claimed 108 medals (48 gold) since boxing made its Olympic debut in St Louis in 1904.

Ireland are lying in 28th position in the all-time Olympic medals table in boxing having secured one gold, four silver and seven bronze medals.

Wayne McCullough, who won a silver medal for Ireland at Barcelona Olympics in 1992,  told today's Irish Times that he was delighted to see Cuba training in Belfast.

“Having had a Cuban trainer guide me through my Olympic journey and having met one in the final, I know that the Cubans are traditionally known as the best boxers in the world, so it’s an amazing achievement to welcome the world’s best boxing team, the Cuban boxers, to train here,” he said.

“With the unrivalled boxing tradition we have in Northern Ireland, plus outstanding facilities and coaches, it’s no surprise to me that they would be so eager to base themselves in Belfast."

Cuba will train at Queen's University Physical Education Centre in Belfast.

ROCHE AND FLAVIN ADVANCE IN RUSSIA

David Roche

Ireland experienced mixed fortunes in the opening exchanges of the Nikolay Pavlyukov Memorial Youth Tournament in Anapa, Russia today.

Irish team captain David Roche and Keith Flavin advanced with impressive wins over Russian opponents.

But Christy Nevin and Dylan Carr bowed out of the tournament at the preliminary round stage by the banks of the Black Sea.

Cork light-welterweight Roche, who claimed the first round 6-2, stopped Vladimir Barovskiy of Russia in round two in the last-32 of the 13-nation tournament.

Kieth Flavin
Kilkenny light-flyweight Flavin was 7-5 ahead going into the final frame of his last-16 meeting versus Sndrey Sokolov - who received a public warning in the third -  en route to a 9-4 decision.

Nevin and Carr lost 13-8 and 10-5 to Nursultan Nisanbaey of Uzbekistan and Artem Hotenov of Russia.

Irish team manager and head coach Billy McClean, who praised Nevin's and Carr's performances against top class opposition, reports that seven Irish boxers will
be in action tomorrow.

Flavin, who is through to the quarter-finals, will meet an Armenian opponent on Wednesday one win away from claiming at least a bronze medal.
